Floating floors have to be able to move
Almost all luxury vinyl is installed as a floating floor. It is not fastened to anything. It expands and contracts with temperature as one large connected sheet, and it needs a gap around the entire perimeter to do that.
Take that gap away and the floor has nowhere to go. It pushes against itself, and it relieves the pressure by lifting. That shows up as peaking, where two planks tent up along a seam, or as a whole area that has gone springy underfoot.
What usually pinned it
Base or quarter round nailed into the floor instead of into the wall. The trim should hold the gap covered while letting the floor slide underneath it. Nailed down through the planks, it staples the floor in place.
Cabinets, an island, or a heavy bookcase set on top of the floating floor rather than the floor being cut around them. Any point load that heavy holds that spot still while the rest of the floor moves.
Transitions installed tight, with no expansion gap at a doorway, or a threshold screwed down through the planks.
No gap left at the walls at all, which is simply an install error and is more common than it should be.
The other cause: the subfloor was never flat
Rigid core planks are thin and stiff, and they do not conform to a dip. Over a low spot the floor bridges the gap, and every step flexes the locking edge. Do that a few thousand times and the joint works itself apart. You get a gapping seam, or a hollow click when you walk over that exact spot.
This one is not fixable by adding trim. The planks in that area have to come up, the low spot gets filled to the manufacturer’s flatness tolerance, and the planks go back.
Sun and heat
South-facing rooms with big windows can push a vinyl floor past what it was rated for, particularly with dark planks. The expansion in that room outruns the gap that was left. If that is what happened, the fix involves opening up more expansion room and sometimes adding a transition to break the run into shorter spans.
What we do
We find where the movement is being blocked, open up proper expansion room, and re-lay the affected planks. Where a plank is damaged rather than just displaced, floating floors can usually be taken apart from the nearest wall and reassembled, so a single ruined plank in the middle of a room does not mean replacing the floor.
If you have leftover planks from the original install, hold onto them and tell us. Colour lots vary, and a plank from your own box will always match better than anything we can buy today.
